Jets owner on Adam Gase hire backlash: ‘I’m not trying to win Twitter’
The Adam Gase era for the New York Jets could not have gotten off to a more inauspicious — and ultimately comical — start as the former Miami Dolphins head coach’s was officially introduced by the team on Monday.
Any criticisms and/or jeers concerning the Gase hire, though, is apparently not being heard by Jets brass. CEO and Chairman Christopher Johnson indicated Monday that he’s not trying to win a social media popularity contest with the hiring of Gase.
“I get it,” Johnson said during Monday’s introductory press conference, via NorthJersey.com. “We just had a couple of down years. I have to earn their trust. I think that they will see this, if not right now they’ll see it pretty soon, as a great hire. I’m not trying to win Twitter. I’m trying to win football games. I think we’re going to win some football games here.”
Gase’s tenure with the Dolphins obviously did not go well, which is why he found himself in the hunt for a job in the first place. Gase compiled a 23-25 record in three seasons in Miami, which Johnson downplayed.
“A lot of people get better their second time around as a head coach,” Johnson said. “I’m pretty sure he’s going to be great here. But yeah, he realizes that mistakes were made. Everybody makes mistakes. It’s a question of whether you learn from your mistakes.”
Jets fans railed against the Gase hire as soon as it was announced. Making matters much worse is the awkwardness of Gase’s introductory presser, during which he became a meme almost instantly thanks to his googly-eyed, twitchy mannerisms. Social media not surprisingly took instant notice.

Johnson may not be angling to “win Twitter,” but Gase, like it or not, certainly did so on Monday.
