Nike honors Kobe Bryant’s 81-point game with Kobe 1 Protro PE sneaker

Nike has announced the upcoming release of a sneaker that honors Kobe Bryant’s 81-point game, one of the most dominant offensive performances in NBA history.

Dubbed the Kobe 1 Protro PE, the limited-edition sneaker is slated for release on the anniversary of Bryant’s legendary game.

The Nike Kobe 1 Protro “81 Pt Game,” appearing on court from DeMar DeRozan during his January 9 game against Memphis, is the same colorway worn by Kobe Bryant when he scored 81 points on January 22, 2006.

The Nike Kobe 1 Protro “81 Pt Game” releases January 22 on SNKRS North America, nike.com and at select retailers globally.

Among the top standout performances of Bryant’s iconic career, the 81-point outburst came on Jan. 22, 2006 against the Toronto Raptors in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 122-104 victory.

Bryant converted on 28-of-46 field goals, shot 7-of-13 from the three-point line and went 18-for-20 from the charity stripe.

“Not even in my dreams,” Bryant said after the game, via NBA.com. “That was something that just happened. It’s tough to explain. It’s just one of those things.

“It really hasn’t, like, set in for me. It’s about the ‘W,’ that’s why I turned it on. It turned into something special. To sit here and say I grasp what happened, that would be lying.”

Fans were afforded a sneak peek at the new Kobe sneaker courtesy of San Antonio Spurs star DeMar DeRozan, who sported the kicks during Wednesday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies.

The white, black and purple sneakers are expected to have a retail price of $175, per Nice Kicks.
