Jerry Jones hints at potential extension for Jason Garrett
The Dallas Cowboys are riding high courtesy of Saturday’s 24-22 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in the wild-card round, and Jerry Jones has since indicated Jason Garrett’s performance this season warrants a contract extension.
The Cowboys owner/general manager made an appearance on 105.3 The Fan Tuesday morning and when the prospects of Garrett receiving a new deal were brought up, Jones seemed to respond in the affirmative, as noted in a tweet from The Dallas Morning News’ Kate Hairopoulos.

Garrett currently is under contract through the 2019 season thanks to a a five-year, $30 million extension signed in January, 2015, so there’s no real pressure to ink a new deal beyond the notion without one Garrett would enter next season with the dreaded “lame-duck” status.
That said, Jones shot down a report in October that suggested an extension for Garrett was imminent, although the Cowboys at the time were scuttling along with a 3-3 record.
Then in December amid the Cowboys’ remarkable turnaround during which the team rattled off seven wins in eight games, Jones indicated the one way Garrett could ensure job security was to “get some playoff wins.”
With one postseason victory already in the bag, the Cowboys head west for a tough showdown with the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday night in the divisional round. Should Dallas pull off an upset, an extension for Garrett this coming offseason would be all but assured, if it’s not already.
The only thing that may change with an appearance in the NFC Championship Game is the terms of Garrett’s deal, both in length and financial terms.
In eight-plus seasons as the Cowboys’ head coach, Garrett has posted a 77-59 regular-season record and a 2-2 mark in the postseason.
