Manny Machado drops, deletes Yankees hint on social media
All signs are pointing to the New York Yankees being the perceived frontrunner in the Manny Machado sweepstakes, and the free agent slugger appeared to drop a hint that he may be indeed heading to the Bronx, only to later delete the apparent tip.
Machado began following YES Network, the broadcast home of the Yankees, this week on Instagram. While it’s certainly a subtle hint and may not mean anything whatsoever, some members of the media tracking Machado’s movements certainly took notice on Monday evening.
fwiw, Manny Machado has started following YES Network, the Yankees' station, on instagram. could be a sign. or could be nothing.— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) January 1, 2019
It was also noticed — and documented — that Machado had started following some other names that suggests he’s intrigued by the Yankees, including Gleyber Torres, Aaron Hicks, Luis Severino and Aroldis Chapman.

Fancred’s Jon Heyman later reported that Machado, for reasons unknown, ceased following YES Network. The MLB insider also speculated why that may have been the case.
Fwiw (maybe not much), Manny Machado has now unfollowed Yes Network on instagram. Doesn’t want to lose leverage with Yankees? Changed his mind? Or just having fun? #yanks #phils #chisox— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) January 1, 2019
As Heyman notes, Machado’s seemingly cryptic social media follows could very well mean absolutely nothing at all. Yet, it is certainly interesting that the free agent made the decision to follow a Yankees-centric Instagram account only to double back and reverse the move.
In other words, until Machado officially announces his free-agency intentions, all the baseball world is left with is reading tea leaves, such as his social media movements, and speculate wildly.
