Pat Shurmur appears to send message to injured Odell Beckham Jr.

Odell Beckham Jr. has missed the New York Giants’ past two games due to a quad injury. While Pat Shurmur would never want to put a player in bad spot, he appeared to be sending Beckham a message about playing despite not being 100 percent.

“I think at this point, I think it’s the player’s responsibility to do everything they can to get on the field, get back in the games,” Shurmur said Wednesday, via the New York Post. “We’re coaches and players, and we play the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, and so it’s important that we do everything we can to show up.”

The Giants (5-9) are in the midst of another lost season, but Shurmur is clearly attempting to create a better culture in his first year as head coach. It appears that effort involves demanding more accountability out of players.

That said, Beckham, who signed a five-year extension in August worth $95 million (with approximately $65 million in guaranteed money), is said to be frustrated with not playing. Several Giants players — including Eli Manning and Sterling Shepard — indicated as much when asked about the situation this week.

Where the Giants stand while playing out the string in a losing season obviously has to be taken into account as Beckham, who is said to be feeling “better than last week,” attempts to return to the field.

“I think it’s important that all the healthy players are ready to play in the game,” Shurmur said. “I guess that question leads into that these two games aren’t important, and I don’t believe that. I think what’s important is that we as a team do everything we can to go out there to play the game and try to win the game.”

Beckham has enjoyed a great campaign despite the Giants’ overall struggles, with 77 receptions for 1,052 yards and six touchdowns. Whether or not he plays again this season remains to be seen, but it’s clear Shurmur, whose relationship with Beckham has been the source of scrutiny, would like to see the enigmatic wideout on the field if he can gut it out.
