Allen Iverson loves LeBron, but says Michael Jordan will always ‘be the GOAT’
Allen Iverson is behind a fascinating piece published Thursday by The Players’ Tribune. Titled, “Allen,” the iconic and enigmatic basketball star shares anecdotes, thoughts and perspectives from his standout basketball career, including immersing himself into the always treacherous LeBron James vs. M.J. debate.
Iverson, who shared the court with Michael Jordan numerous times, insists when it comes right down to it, no one will ever eclipse His Airness as the greatest basketball player of all-time.
“Mike is always going to be the GOAT,” Iverson is quoted as saying in the piece. “And please don’t even insult me with any of this ‘stats, AI!’ business, like you have a chance of changing my mind.”
Iverson goes on to give credit where credit is due, making it clear he admires and respects James. Still, in a quote that evokes his infamous “Talking about practice” press conference, A.I. lays it all out on the line.
“First of all, I love LeBron. I have nothing but love for LeBron. That’s the best player of his generation, one of the best ever, a great husband, great father, great role model, and it’s even beyond that: What he’s doing with that school in Akron?? It’s a beautiful thing.
“We’re talking about Mike.
“We’re talking about Mike, O.K.??
“We’re talking about Black Jesus himself.”
James has spent his entire career being confronted by discussions of whether or not he’ll ever surpass M.J. as the greatest basketball player ever. In fact, James once colorfully referred to Jordan as “this ghost I’m chasing.” The LeBron-M.J. debate probably will continue long after The King leaves the game, and there will always be two camps arguing the issue.
That said, Iverson has made it perfectly clear in which camp he resides.
