Jim Kelly optimistic after latest cancer surgery that doctors say should be his last

Jim Kelly underwent surgery on Wednesday in his latest battle with oral cancer, and the Hall of Famer’s wife, Jill, provided encouraging updates on Instagram, writing, “‘all went as planned!” and thanking everyone for their ongoing support.

The most encouraging news Jill Kelly relayed about her husband’s treatment is that this most recent surgery, doctors say, should be his last.

Surgeons at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City on March 28 “successfully removed” cancer from Kelly’s upper jaw and lymph nodes in his neck. The procedure also included reconstruction of Kelly’s upper jaw. Kelly returned to New York again in June for an additional procedure.

Kelly then revealed in July at his football camp that a checkup had been scheduled after “something came up” amid continued treatment, which resulted in the scans revealing the absence of cancer.

Kelly originally revealed in 2013 that he had been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in his upper jaw. On Aug. 20, 2014, Kelly was declared cancer-free. The Buffalo Bills icon then revealed this past March that his cancer had returned, having been discovered via biopsy after suffering severe pain in his jaw.

In the midst of his latest cancer battle, Kelly delivered an inspiring and emotional speech after receiving Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the ESPYS.

Jill Kelly without question has been her husband’s rock throughout his cancer battle, and her frequent updates to social media has served as a means through which supporters could keep up on the Buffalo Bills icon’s progress through treatment. Hopefully, doctors are correct and that this latest surgery will be the last Kelly has to endure and his road to full recovery now can begin in earnest.
