Peyton Manning breaks down Eli game film for his ESPN show

In what arguably could have been cause for some degree of awkwardness but turned out quite compelling, Peyton Manning broke down game film of brother Eli for an edition of his subscription-based ESPN+ show “Detail.”

In teaser footage of the episode released by ESPN, the elder Manning brother dissects Eli’s performance in the New York Giants’ 27-23 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night.

The video provided shows Peyton breaking down two plays and the adjustments made by his brother that led to a completion to Saquon Barkley on an “angle route, a Texas route” that resulted in a 24-yard gain.

“I know it is a short throw,” Peyton said in part about the play, as transcribed by the New York Post. “And, I know you are going to say, ‘He is kissing his butt, because he is related to [him.]’ I don’t care if this was Bob Avellini, Steve Fuller or Casey Weldon making this throw — guys that I’m not related to — this is a good throw. This is a side-arm throw, negotiating the defender.”

It’s interesting how Peyton makes sure to stress no favoritism is being afforded Eli in the film breakdown, though it’s not like his little brother has any plans of watching the show.

“I haven’t seen any of them yet and I doubt I’ll watch this one either,” Eli said. “I’m happy he is staying busy and has something to do. He asked a few questions. I can’t give away too many secrets. He was at the game and had some pretty good insights. He is a pretty smart guy. I hope he’ll go easy on me.”

“Detail” is ESPN+’s iteration of the popular NBA version hosted by Kobe Bryant, which is slated for a second season. Manning said at the time of the show’s announcement that he was “honored to help expand Kobe’s Detail to a football audience.”
