Charles Barkley hot take: Warriors are a dynasty because of Kevin Durant

Charles Barkley is famous for hot takes, and the outspoken NBA on TNT analyst offered up a real doozy on Thursday night about the Golden State Warriors.

Amid all the drama of the past week stemming from Monday’s confrontation between Kevin Durant and Draymond Green, Barkley offered up the opinion that should Durant leave the Warriors, the team will no longer be contenders.

“The Warriors know if they lose Kevin Durant, they’re not going to be contenders anymore,” Barkley said, as transcribed by 247Sports. “They’re moving into a brand new building next year. They’ve got to do everything in their power to keep Kevin Durant. Listen, Klay, Steph, and Draymond, if they move into that new building and they’re charging $25,000 a seat, it ain’t going to be sold out.

“The reason the Warriors are a dynasty is because of Kevin Durant, plain and simple. They wouldn’t have won the last two championships if they didn’t have Kevin Durant… Everybody who knows anything about basketball [knows] the Warriors aren’t going to win anything without Kevin Durant, especially going forward.”

Barkley being Barkley: King of the Hot Take … especially when it comes to the Warriors.

What Sir Charles neglected to keep in mind is that the Warriors notched an NBA-record 73-win campaign in the season before Durant arrived, although that historic season ultimately ended in disappointment, losing in seven games to the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, the Durant-less Warriors did beat the Cavs in the Finals the previous season.

There’s obviously no way to say whether or not the Warriors would have upended the LeBron James-led Cavs and won their past two championships without Durant. Still, the team was nevertheless well on its way to becoming a dynasty.

Chances are if Durant does leave — which appears to be more likely than not at this point — the Warriors will continue to be a championship contender, even if Barkley doesn’t buy it.
