Amari Cooper on joining Cowboys: ‘It feels like a fresh start’

Amari Cooper had his first practice on Wednesday as a member of the Dallas Cowboys.

Afterward, the former Oakland Raiders star wide receiver made his first public comments about the trade during a press conference at the team’s facilities, making it clear in comments to reporters that he’s eager to move on and take advantage of a new opportunity.

“It feels great,” Cooper said of joining the Cowboys after three-plus seasons with the Raiders, via The Dallas Morning News. “It feels like a fresh start, just like a freshman year in college or something like that.

“I mean the first thing you think about when you hear the Cowboys is that star, America’s Team, and all of that. It’s a great franchise.”

Cooper added during the presser while he was not actively seeking a trade, Oakland’s decision to move him did come as a surprise due to the rumors that swirled in the days leading up to transaction.

“When I found out I was going to be a Dallas Cowboys, I don’t know, I just knew I would have to adapt fast,” Cooper said. “I knew everything would happen real fast.

“I didn’t really have time to think about it, to be honest. Flew here the next day, packed some stuff and was ready for a change.”

The acquisition of Cooper, considered among the top receivers in the game, came at the tall price of a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. It does merit noting Cooper has struggled this season — only 22 receptions for 280 yards and one touchdown — albeit on a terrible Raiders team completely falling apart under Jon Gruden’s watch.

All that said, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett defended the high cost of landing Cooper earlier this week, saying the talented wideout has a “bright future” in Dallas.

It would appear Cooper feels the exact same way.
