Kevin Love has great line about getting technical for saying ‘Come on!’
Kevin Love received a technical foul in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ season opener against the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night. The reason? According to Love, it was for yelling “Come on!” on a call. And getting T’d up for such an infraction elicited a great one-liner out of the Cavs star.
“Whitest thing I could’ve said,” Love said, according Joe Vardon of The Athletic (subscription required).
While Love retained his sense of humor over the technical, he found his performance on Wednesday night no laughing matter.
In his first game as the de facto team leader on the Cavaliers with the exodus of LeBron James, Love failed to live up to the billing. While he scored 21 points along with seven rebounds and two assists, the points produced came on 5-of-18 shooting (27.8 percent), including 1-of-4 from long distance.
Love was so disappointed in his performance he felt compelled to apologize to Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue after the loss.
“That rhythm wasn’t there tonight,” Love said. “You could tell that game action wasn’t there for me tonight. Thought I got a lot of really, really good looks on the offensive end. On the defensive end, just our switches and closing out, just my attention to detail wasn’t there.
“I told Ty after the game, I said that’s on me and I apologize. We all have to be better and I think we know it.”
There will without question be bumps in the road as the Cavs navigate the first season of the post-LeBron era. Love proved capable of carrying a team during his time with the Minnesota Timberwolves. While that was many years ago, there is not any reason to expect that Love will more often than not put up far better performances than the dud on Wednesday night.
