Rob Gronkowski reacts to Patrick Mahomes calling Travis Kelce NFL’s best TE
The red-hot Kansas City Chiefs head to Gillette Stadium this weekend for a highly anticipated showdown with the New England Patriots. The AFC matchup will feature two of the NFL’s top tight ends, Travis Kelce and Rob Gronkowski.
Earlier this week, Patrick Mahomes proclaimed Kelce as the “best tight end in football.” When asked about Mahomes’ comments, Gronkowski not surprisingly refused to get ensnared in any debate.
“I just try to be the best I can every single week, do my job every single week,” Gronkowski said. “The rankings and all that, the comparisons, I’ll just leave that up to you guys. Whatever you guys say. I just try to do my best. I think he’s a great player, and I’ve just got to worry about what I can do to help out the team.”
Gronk went on to praise the “quick” and “shifty” Kelce, adding he enjoys “watching him play when I get a chance.”
A tale of the tape so far this season gives Kelce the statistical edge. In five games this season, Kelce has 28 catches for 407 yards and four touchdowns. Meanwhile, Gronkowski has 23 receptions for 308 yards and only one touchdown. The Patriots tight end admits he needs to do a better job getting in the end zone.
“I’ve got to pick it up,” Gronkowski said. “I’ve got to start scoring.”
Mahomes admitted to being biased towards Kelce given he has never had the opportunity to play with Gronkowski. If Tom Brady were asked who he believes is the best tight end in the game, odds are certain he’d pick Gronk.
The showdown between the Chiefs (5-0) and Patriots (3-2) at Gillette Stadium is NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” matchup. Setting the debate aside, expect big plays out of both big-time tight ends.
