Anthony Rizzo explains wearing uni on flight to ‘joke’ makeup game

Anthony Rizzo attracted a lot of attention on Thursday for wearing his full uniform on the Chicago Cubs’ flight to D.C. for a makeup game against the Washington Nationals.

And if Rizzo’s explanation as to why he did such a thing is any indication, the Cubs first baseman did not find the flight — nor the makeup game — funny in the first place.

The Cubs are in a midst of a brutal stretch of 30 days without a day off, not to mention how rainy D.C. remains in the target of Hurricane Florence, hence Rizzo’s humorous take on an unpleasant situation.

“I was just kind of having fun throughout a tough stretch in the season,” Rizzo said Thursday, via ESPN. “I mean, we’re flying into a state of emergency with rain in the forecast. It’s kind of a joke, so why not keep joking around about it and just have fun?”

To say Rizzo packed light for the trip would be an understatement. Rizzo did not travel with a change of clothes, slept in his uniform and planned to wear it on the return flight to Chicago. At the same time it’s not like he had a choice to do otherwise but to wear his dirty uni, presumably much to the chagrin of his nearest travel companions.

“What can you do?” Rizzo said. “… At the end of the day, our front office, our owner, they have our back. We’re in a long stretch of games. There’s people in MLB that have been on the players’ side. They understand the human element of it, and they seem not to care at all. So it is what it is. We can sit here and complain about [it], or we can joke about it. I’ll take the joking around part — a lot more fun.”

Fair enough. Even better? The Cubs beat the Nats in the critical game, winning 4-3 in 10 innings with Rizzo going 2-for-5. Now there’s a reason to smile.
