Tom Brady clarifies comments about how last few seasons ‘weren’t enjoyable’

Tom Brady has attempted to clarify comments that surfaced this week in which he expressed how the last few seasons “weren’t enjoyable” for him.

The surprising remarks from the New England Patriots quarterback originally came to light in the epilogue installment of his Facebook documentary, “Tom Vs. Time,” which premiered Wednesday.

“The last couple of years, a lot of parts about football weren’t enjoyable when they should have been,” Brady said in part in the documentary.

Such candid remarks not surprisingly generated great interest and inspired rampant speculation. It’s not surprising, then, that said enlightening remarks were a topic of conversation during Brady’s interview with Jim Gray that aired on Westwood One Radio on Thursday night.

“I love football — I love the sport, I love being on the field, I love playing the game — I think sometimes it can feel like there are a lot of other obligations that come along with football,” Brady told Gray in the NFL Opening Night interview. “If you let those take too much of an impact or toll, you can bring those onto the field.

“Being in it for 19 years, I’ve grown a lot, I’ve learned a lot, and it comes down to prioritization. I think this offseason was great for me to spend a lot of time with my family, catch up on some things that I’ve never had opportunities to do, to really refocus and reenergize for what’s really a marathon of a season. It’s a lot of energy and effort you put out. You want everything in your tank and ready to.”

The widely held assumption was that Brady’s original comments may have been a subtle allusion to the purported issues allegedly plaguing the Patriots. Said rumors of alleged organizational dysfunction originally were brought to light in a bombshell ESPN report last season; although all involved parties, including Brady, Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft vehemently denied the veracity of the reporting.

Brady obviously would never disclose such a thing explicitly, so his clarifying remarks Thursday hardly came as a shock.
