Watch: Provocative trailer released for LeBron James’ ‘Shut Up and Dribble’

Showtime has released a trailer for LeBron James’ upcoming three-part documentary, “Shut Up and Dribble.” The footage certainly establishes the series will be a provocative exploration of issues that inspire the Los Angeles Lakers superstar’s interest and passion.

The three-part series aspires to provide “a powerful inside look at the changing role of athletes in our fraught cultural and political environment, through the lens of the NBA,” per a report from The Washington Post. The director attached to the project is Gotham Chopra, known for working on video projects with Kobe Bryant, among other high-profile athletes.

“Shut Up and Dribble,” the product of James’ production company SpringHill Entertainment (in partnership with longtime business associate Maverick Carter), takes its name from controversial comments made earlier this year by Laura Ingraham.

The FOX News host ignited a firestorm by suggesting James and other athletes ought to stop involving themselves in political and social issues. Instead, Ingraham argued athletes who are outspoken about such matters should just “shut up and dribble.”

“If being a star athlete is inherently a political experience, ‘Shut Up and Dribble’ tells that complex and dramatic story from the past to the present and from the inside out,” David Nevins, president and CEO of Showtime Networks Inc., said in a statement upon the announcement of the series.

“LeBron James is one of many competitors whose place in the spotlight has led not to silence but perspective, and he, Maverick Carter and Gotham Chopra have given us an important, insightful docuseries that should bring their fans and fellow citizens to a higher level of discourse, rather than the dismissal satirized in the title.”

“Shut Up and Dribble” will premiere at some point in October.
