Bill Belichick zings Tom Brady over Danny Etling’s long TD run

Bill Belichick had a little fun at Tom Brady’s expense while reacting to Danny Etling’s 86-yard touchdown run during Thursday’s 17-12 victory over the New York Giants in the New England Patriots’ preseason finale.

Etling, who sits third on the Patriots’ depth chart behind Brady and Brian Hoyer, unleashed his remarkable scamper to the end zone late in the fourth quarter.

And to say it was a relatively easy run would be an understatement, as nary a Giants defender got within a sniffing distance of Etling on the brilliantly designed bootleg run.

Belichick, never one to deliver praise for no reason, was left quite impressed by Etling’s display of athleticism and speed.

“Well that was one of the most exciting plays I’ve seen in preseason, I must say,” Belichick said. “Great call by Chad [O’Shea] and Danny [Etling] is a little faster than we thought he was. But, I was very proud of our team tonight. Our guys played hard.”

And then Belichick unleashed a brilliant zinger, with Brady serving as the foil. While arguably the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, Brady has never been known for being fleet-footed.

“When is the last time a quarterback ran for 85 yards on the Patriots? It’s like at least 20 years I know that,” Belichick quipped. “Maybe Grogan? Plunkett?

Given Brady has had a stranglehold on the Patriots’ starting quarterback spot for nearly two decades, yeah, it’s safe to say Belichick was well aware of what point was being made.

It goes without saying it’s always a treat when the curmudgeonly Belichick shows off his sense of humor, however droll and dry it may be.
