Watch: Young Rays fan blown away by receiving bat from Carlos Gomez

Carlos Gomez gave a young Tampa Bay Rays fan a memory to cherish for years by presenting the youngster with a bat during the finale of Players’ Weekend on Sunday at Tropicana Field.

The Rays completed an impressive three-game sweep of the division-leading Boston Red Sox on Sunday courtesy of a dominant 9-1 win. At some point during the game, Gomez surprised the youngster by handing over his bat. As the video shows, the kid could barely believe what was happening.

The back of Gomez’s jersey identifies him as “El Final,” his chosen nickname for Players’ Weekend., via The phrase, which translates to “it’s over,” is common in Gomez’s native Dominican Republic.

“I was lucky enough to see Carlos Gomez when he first came up with the Mets,” TBS analyst Ron Darling said after Gomez’s act of kindness, “and he was as nice then as he is now.”

“It’s not just Players Weekend,” play-by-play announcer Ernie Johnson responded. “It’s fans’ weekend, too.”

The Rays have enjoyed a decent season, sitting at 70-61. But in the loaded AL East, the Rays find themselves completely out of the division race. And despite being nine games over .500, Tampa Bay is nevertheless 8.5 games back in the wild card chase as well.

Gomez’s kind gesture shows, however, that there are plenty of good times to be had at the Trop, even if a postseason berth is not in the cards. Further, the gifting of the bat showcases how Players’ Weekend further enhances the ballpark experience for fans young and old.
