Watch: Mets prospect Jhoan Urena hits two grand slams, adds solo shot
New York Mets prospect Jhoan Urena had a day at the plate for the ages by slugging two grand slams in one game while tacking on a solo shot for good measure.
Urena’s showstopping performance came as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies — the Mets’ Double-A affiliate — routed the Hartford Yard Goats — the Colorado Rockies’ Double-A squad — by a score of 12-2. All told, Urena slugged in a franchise-record nine RBI.
“I feel good and I keep working hard,” Urena said of his power display, via MiLB.com. “I knew that third home run was another grand slam, so it was a great feeling. I was really happy.”
Urena’s grand slams sandwiched his solo homer. The prospect third baseman went down swinging in the eighth inning but still notched his eighth three-hit game on the season.
“I had three home runs, so I was trying to hit a fourth, but it just didn’t happen,” Urena said. “I thank God I played a good game today.”
Urena, 23, is slashing at a .252/.317/.410 clip with 13 homers in 116 games this season.
