Nick Foles: Eagles’ unclear QB situation for Week 1 presents a ‘challenge’
Nick Foles knows that once Carson Wentz is given the green light and demonstrates the ability to handle a full workload, the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback job will be settled. Not surprisingly, Foles admits such an uncertain situation presents its own set of difficult circumstances.
“That’s the challenge,” Foles said this week, via ESPN. “That’s the challenge for anyone in my situation … you just don’t know, and I think that’s where, and I told you all during the playoffs, just staying in the moment, really focusing on today and this moment because that’s all I can control. And it’s hard at times.
“There are times when your mind wanders and then you start dealing with it, but that doesn’t help you — it just takes you off the moment and what you need to do right now. And that’s what I’m really focusing on … and that sort of alleviates all of the different anxieties that you may face.”
Foles, despite suffering a shoulder injury in last week’s game against the New England Patriots, is slated to start in the Eagles’ third preseason game on Thursday against the Cleveland Browns. In practice, Foles is currently splitting first-team reps with Wentz, who has long stated it’s his goal to be under center when the Eagles face the Atlanta Falcons in a Week 1 showdown on Sept. 6.
Eagles head coach Doug Pederson, however, has also stressed that patience will be exercised with Wentz, saying the team intends to “let things unfold” as it relates to the young quarterback’s Week 1 availability.
The Eagles without question boast among the best insurance policies at the quarterback position in Foles, the reigning Super Bowl MVP. To his credit, Foles understands it’s Wentz’s team and pledges to be the consummate teammate by accepting whatever situation presents itself.
“Whenever the team decides,” Foles said. “I got to experience being a backup the last several years where I never really knew when I’d play. I have experience with this. So whatever is needed of me, I’ll be ready.”
