Sean Payton continues to use pop culture references in Saints talk

Sean Payton continues to find interesting pop culture references a great way to describe the New Orleans Saints and their upcoming season. Earlier this week, the Saints coach somehow worked in a “Chutes and Ladders” reference when discussing where the team stands at the onset of training camp.

How did Payton manage to sneak in a mention to the classic board game of yesteryear? Allow Payton to explain it himself.

“Remember that game, ‘Chutes and Ladders,'” Payton said of where the team is at in preparations for the 2018 NFL season, via The Times-Picayune. “You hit a chute, you came all the way (to the start). That’s where we are right now, at the beginning with the dice.”

The “Chutes and Ladders” reference follows what Payton had to say about the Saints’ return game during an appearance on NFL Network when he likened it to “The Bachelor,” of all things.

“Our return game is kind of like ‘The Bachelor’ right now,” Payton said Sunday. “We got about 12 contestants, all with roses. We don’t know who our returner is going to be, and if she doesn’t like any of them, we’ll bring in more.”

A reference to a classic board game? Check. Mentioning a popular reality TV show? Got it. The only thing Payton needs to do know is sprinkle in a well-crafted “Seinfeld” or “The Simpsons” mention — as examples — into his commentary and he’ll establish himself as a true pop culture aficionado, whatever that’s worth.
