Book: Tom Brady was furious with Robert Kraft over Deflategate

A newly released book suggests Tom Brady was furious with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft over how the Deflategate scandal was handled during some of the earliest days of what turned into a years-long saga.

The situation came to a head after Kraft in a May 2015 press conference announced the Patriots would accept Brady’s four-game suspension. The NFL’s punishment stemmed from the accusation that Brady handled footballs in an illegal manner during the AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts earlier that year.

“The heart and soul and strength of NFL, partnership of 32 teams. At no time should the agenda of one team outweigh the collective good of the full 32,” Kraft said at the presser.

To say Brady was not pleased with how Kraft sided with the league over him would be an understatement. The allegations of Brady’s sense of betrayal emerge in the pages of “12: The Inside Story of Tom Brady’s Fight for Redemption,” which was released Tuesday.

Kraft’s star quarterback Tom Brady watched the news conference along with millions of others on television. He was devastated and angry. Brady grabbed his cell phone and punched in the contact number for DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the National Football League Players Association.

“What the f—?” Brady shouted over the phone.“Why am I not getting the support I deserve on this thing?”

The Deflategate saga of course dragged on for years afterward, with Brady waging a protracted legal battle with the NFL.

After the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated Brady’s four-game suspension, a request for a rehearing was declined. Brady announced in July of 2016 he would accept the suspension and sat out the first four games of the following season. Brady would later say ending the Deflategate battle was a “personal” decision.

The alleged details surrounding Brady’s unhappiness of course now comes amid the backdrop of purported organizational dysfunction plaguing the Patriots. Perhaps Kraft’s comments served as an initial impetus to the ongoing issues. Further, a recent report indicates friction between Brady, Kraft and Bill Belichick remains unresolved.
