Starlin Castro debuts Marlins’ MVP chain dedicated to Jose Fernandez (pic)
Starlin Castro played a huge role in the Miami Marlins’ 9-3 win over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, hitting a critical three-run homer. After the game, the Marlins second baseman was sporting a huge medallion in the shape of the team’s logo attached to large gold chain draped around his neck.
It turns out the team will now award the medallion to each game’s MVP at home games at Marlins Park. And to add even more meaning, the MVP chain is dedicated to the memory of the late Jose Fernandez, as it’s dubbed the JDF16MVPOfTheGame Chain.
Castro took to Instagram to proudly model the MVP bling.
We’re gonna keep it here [at Marlins Park],” Castro said, via the Sun-Sentinel. “And Thursday, when we come back, whoever’s gonna be the hero is gonna put it on.”

“[It doesn’t] matter who it is,” Castro said of who’s eligible to earn the honor of donning the chain. “No matter who it is, even a pitcher, position player, no matter.
“Even the coaches can put it on.”
Fernandez obviously still casts a large shadow over the Marlins organization after the ace pitcher was killed in a boating accident on Sept. 25, 2016. The MVP award named in his honor is simply the latest way the Marlins continue to honor Fernandez.
