Kevin Durant supports LeBron James’ decision to join Lakers

Kevin Durant on Thursday praised LeBron James’ decision to join the Los Angeles Lakers. The Golden State Warriors star suggested that not only was it a good move for James, the decision could have ripple effect that benefits other NBA players.

In essence, James’ ability to expand his empire beyond the basketball court opens doors for everyone in the league, Durant stated during a keynote Q&A at Variety’s Sports and Entertainment Breakfast.

“I’m excited he took advantage of this opportunity to be in L.A. and play for the Lakers. It’s great that he decided to take his career to the next step,” Durant said at the event held at the Beverly Hilton. “To be here in L.A. is only good for him and for us basketball players to see that.”

James is quickly becoming a powerful presence in Hollywood thanks to SpringHill Entertainment, the production company he founded with longtime partner Maverick Carter.

James’ reach into the entertainment world is also aided by his role with Uninterrupted. Founded by James and Carter, Uninterrupted is a multimedia platform for athletes similar in concept to Derek Jeter’s The Players’ Tribune.

“I think really great ones like LeBron have the opportunity to pick both,” Durant, who recently hung out with James in Hollywood, said. “Have a great basketball environment, but also live in a place to help his business advance. He’s earned that right to make those decisions.”

Rich Paul, James’ agent, said joining the Lakers was a “basketball decision.” Given James’ varied interests beyond basketball, landing in L.A. serves many other purposes as well.
