Agent says LeBron James choosing Lakers was a ‘basketball decision’ (vid)

LeBron James’ agent Rich Paul indicated on Thursday during an appearance on NBA TV that the superstar choosing to join the Los Angeles Lakers was simply a “basketball decision.”

Paul joined the broadcast crew during the Summer League game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies in Las Vegas. When asked about how James decided on the Lakers, Paul explained:

“It was just a basketball decision,” Paul said, as transcribed by The Spun. “When he went to Miami, it was about winning a championship. When he came home [to Cleveland], it was about delivering a promise. This one, he really had no footing. It was basically about what he wanted to do and what made him happy. And he earned that.”

Paul’s explanation interestingly jibes with what he previously told Sports Illustrated’s Lee Jenkins about James’ move to L.A.

“In 2010, when he went to Miami, it was about championships,” Paul told Jenkins. “In 2014, when he went back to Cleveland, it was about delivering on a promise. In 2018, it was just about doing what he wants to do.”

While it may have been indeed a basketball decision as Paul asserts, James has been making considerable inroads in Hollywood making significant inroads into Hollywood over the past few years with his production company SpringHill Entertainment, which he runs alongside longtime business partner Maverick Carter.

In fact, James already has been making his presence known in Hollywood after officially signing his deal with the Lakers earlier this week.

Variety reports James and Carter are in talks to produce an untitled “body-swapping” comedy, one in which James will also take on a starring role. James also was spotted dining with Tinseltown A-listers Al Pacino and Leonardo DiCaprio at Avra Beverly Hills on Wednesday night.

It goes without saying setting up shop in Los Angeles will make James’ pursuit of becoming a power player in the entertainment world that much easier. Basketball decision? Sure, but signing with the Lakers certainly was a sound business decision as well.
