DeSean Jackson calls Jameis Winston ‘a good dude’ amid suspension (vid)
The three-game suspension of Jameis Winston was made official on Thursday by the NFL. Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver DeSean Jackson on Friday came out in defense of his embattled teammate, touting Winston as a “good dude and a good teammate.”
The NFL conducted a lengthy investigation into an incident in March of 2016 in which Winston was accused by a female Uber driver of groping her during a ride in Arizona.
The Buccaneers have since issued a statement in which the organization expressed disappointment in Winston, who issued an apology of his own while acknowledging the suspension via statement.
Jackson, on the other hand, went to bat for Winston when approached by a TMZ camera crew, describing the entire situation as “tough.”
“You can’t turn your back on someone when they going through something,” Jackson said of Winston, via TMZ.
Jackson went on to characterize Winston as “a champ” who has “been through a lot in his career.” Jackson also believes Winston will recover from the scandal and will bounce back after the suspension.
The NFL has been questioned over suspending Winston for only three games and Winston himself was roundly criticized for the argued tone-deaf nature of his apology.
That said, along with the nature of the allegations against Winston, the case can be made Jackson’s endorsement of his Bucs teammate as “a good dude” — especially in the immediate aftermath of the suspension announcement — sounds a little off, even if Jackson’s heart was in the right place. Then again, what else was Jackson supposed to say?
Others, on the other hand, were not quite so kind.
