Jim Kelly set to undergo more surgery to treat recurrence of oral cancer
Jim Kelly is back in New York for follow-up surgery to treat his recurrence of oral cancer earlier this year, according to an Instagram dispatch from the Buffalo Bills icon’s wife, Jill.
Back in the Big Apple for more surgery today. Another step forward in the healing process. If all goes well, we will be back home by the weekend. Other than God’s Grace and a whole lot of praying… I don’t know how he does it. Like Hunter’s life, Jim’s struggles are a constant reminder that this life is not the end of the story. God’s plans are eternal. And He’s just getting started. We have so much to look forward to! There is immeasurably more waiting… P.S. Thank you for praying! Wish I could hug you and thank you in person.
“Back in the Big Apple for more surgery today. Another step forward in the healing process,” Jilly Kelly writes in part on Instagram post shared Thursday morning. “If all goes well, we will be back home by the weekend. Other than God’s Grace and a whole lot of praying… I don’t know how he does it.”
Surgeons at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City on March 28 “successfully removed” cancer from Kelly’s upper jaw and lymph nodes in his neck. The procedure also included reconstruction of Kelly’s upper jaw.
Kelly originally revealed in 2013 that he had been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in his upper jaw. On Aug. 20, 2014, Kelly was declared cancer-free. The Buffalo Bills icon then revealed in March that his cancer had returned, having been discovered via biopsy after suffering severe pain in his jaw.
There have been some encouraging developments along the way in recent months regarding Kelly’s long-term prognosis.
It goes without saying the entire NFL community is pulling for Kelly as he continues his battle.
