Brandon Morrow lands on DL after having back spasms while undressing

The Chicago Cubs on Wednesday placed Brandon Morrow on the 10-day disabled list after the closer suffered back spasms while taking off his pants earlier this week, per a team announcement via the Chicago Tribune.

The injury occurred as Morrow undressed at home early Monday morning upon the Cubs’ return from St. Louis following a series with the Cardinals.

“Just undressing at my house,” Morrow told reporters on Tuesday. “Like 3 a.m., in the closet, got my right leg off. Left one just felt like a spasm in my back.

“It’s frustrating any time you can’t get out there, especially when you can’t go because of something stupid like taking your pants off.”

Morrow was unavailable for Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers and deemed himself day-to-day at this point. That unfortunately proved to be premature.

“I’m hoping that since it’s not like a trauma-induced spasm — like I wasn’t throwing a pitch or lifting something or twisting — that once the muscle relaxes it should be OK,” Morrow said. “It’s very localized. It’s not like it’s spreading out and stuff.

“Getting hurt any time’s frustrating, but when it’s not related to throwing a baseball it’s even that much more frustrating.”

Morrow had converted on 16 of 17 save attempts before hitting the DL, which was dated retroactive to June 17.

There of course are no shortage of instances where major leaguers have suffered bizarre injuries involving seemingly mundane activities that have nothing to do with playing baseball. Morrow can now count himself among those impacted by such stupefying setbacks.
