Nick Williams ‘fine’ after getting drilled in nose by ball on freak play (vid)

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Williams suffered a nasty injury during Monday’s 6-5 victory in extra innings over the St. Louis Cardinals but manager Gabe Kapler said after the game Williams is “fine.”

Williams’ injury came as the result of a freak play during the eighth inning when a deep fly ball off the bat of Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter caromed off the right-field fence and ricocheted right into his nose.

Williams somehow had the wherewithal to keep his head in the game, throwing the ball back into the infield before blood started pouring out of his nose.

Williams not surprisingly ultimately left the game as a result of the freak play which resulted, as noted, in an inordinate amount of bleeding.

According to Kapler, though, Williams is somehow no worse for wear for the most part.

“He’s fine,” Kapler said, via MLB.com. “I saw him after the game. He had a bloody nose. When I went out there to look at him, blood was coming out of his nose and it was the right time to make that switch. I don’t want to put anybody at risk.”

It remains to be seen if Williams will be good to go for Tuesday’s tilt with the Cardinals at Citizens Bank Park. Either way, quite the ugly scene nevertheless.
