Chris Long blasts Roger Goodell over silence on Trump, White House drama (vid)

Chris Long is among the most outspoken players in the NFL and on Wednesday set his sights on Roger Goodell over the commissioner’s silence amid the drama this week involving Donald Trump abruptly calling off the Philadelphia Eagles’ planned visit to the White House.

Reports surfacing in the wake of Trump’s last-minute announcement Monday evening appeared to indicate among the reasons the President canceled the event was that it appeared the Eagles would only be sending a small contingent to the White House.

In fact, a statement issued Tuesday by the White House placed all the blame on the Eagles for the sudden cancellation and accused the team of abandoning their fans. Trump instead held a “Celebration of America” event.

Long wonders why Goodell has remained silent amid all the noise.

“He didn’t say anything?” Long said, via “Hey, I don’t speak for the commissioner, if he doesn’t want to stand up for the players, that’s not really my business.”

Long was among the many Eagles players who stated they would not attend the White House ceremony. He was also among the most vocal critics of the league’s new anthem policy.

Long went on to defend his Eagles teammates despite the criticism coming from Trump and the White House.

“I know my teammates are great men,” Long said. “There’s men of faith in this locker room, there’s men who serve their communities, men who have a lot to give back to people with a lot less, and they don’t have to do that at all. What the commissioner wants to do, that’s not my business.”

Long was not alone in weighing in on the uncomfortable situation as Eagles head coach Doug Pederson also commented on the fallout as well.

And Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins perhaps provided the most compelling commentary in the wake of the canceled event without saying one single word.

The controversy surrounding the situation not surprisingly sparked conversation well beyond NFL circles, including a few NBA superstar athletes weighing in on the controversy. Do not expect the debate to quiet down anytime soon.
