Kobe Bryant announces upcoming release of ‘Mamba Mentality’ book

Kobe Bryant, having already made successful inroads into Hollywood courtesy of winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for “Dear Basketball,” has now set his post-NBA retirement sights on conquering the literary world.

Bryant on Tuesday took to Twitter to tout the upcoming release of his first nonfiction book, title, “The Mamba Mentality: How I Play.”

Per a press release by publisher MCD/FSG, Bryant’s motivation to write the book stemmed from a desire “to share his vast knowledge and understanding of the game to take readers on an unprecedented journey to the core of the legendary ‘Mamba Mentality,'” a nod to his Black Mamba moniker. The release also references Bryant’s cited obligation to “teach young players, hardcore fans, and devoted students of the game how to approach it.”

For the first time, and in his own words, Bryant reveals his famously detailed approach and the steps he took to prepare mentally and physically to not just succeed at the game, but to excel. Readers will learn how Bryant studied an opponent, how he channeled his passion for the game, how he played through injuries. They’ll also get fascinating granular detail as he breaks down specific plays and match-ups from throughout his career.

Bryant’s words will be complimented with images courtesy of Andrew D. Bernstein, the longtime official photographer for the Los Angeles Lakers during Bryant’s Hall of Fame career with the team.

Phil Jackson, who coached Bryant to five NBA titles with the Lakers, will write the introduction. Pau Gasol is set to write the forward.

“The Mamba Method” is slated for release on Oct. 13.
