Ryan Shazier makes appearance at Steelers OTAs (pic)

Ryan Shazier on Tuesday made an appearance at the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first OTA, watching all the action from the 90-minute session while riding around the practice fields at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on a golf cart.

Suffice to say, as has often been the case, Shazier’s Steelers teammates were pleased to see him.

“It was great to see him out there, great to laugh with him,” Ben Roethlisberger said, via triblive.com.

Big Ben later joked about Shazier tipping the defense on play calls due to his proximity to the field.

“I said he tried to give our plays away,” Roethlisberger said. “He had his cart on the sideline, and I had to tell him to move because we were throwing an out route. Now, the whole defense knew what we were throwing. I said he was doing it on purpose to help the defense out.”

Encouraging and inspirational updates have been common as Shazier progresses through his challenging rehabilitation. And the Steelers linebacker has made myriad appearances, both at local sporting events as well as Steelers practice sessions. With that in mind, Steelers linebacker Vince Williams was not all that surprised by Shazier’s appearance at OTAs.

“I see Ryan every day, I talk to Ryan every day,” Williams said. “It really was no big deal. Ryan is always around.”

Shazier has stated he “definitely” expects to resume his career at some point and also believes he will one day be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. However, Shazier will not play in 2018, which is hardly a surprise given the nature and severity of the spinal injury he suffered during a Dec. 4 game.
