Charles Barkley: Only an ‘idiot’ thinks Warriors won’t sweep Rockets
Charles Barkley was left extremely disappointed by Game 1 in the Western Conference Finals, in which the Golden State Warriors wrestled away the Houston Rockets’ home-court advantage thanks to a 119-106 victory Monday night at Toyota Center.
Actually, fellow NBA on TNT analyst Shaquille O’Neal shares Barkley’s doom-and-gloom outlook to a certain extent. Although it was Barkley who stated a belief, arguably prematurely, that the Warriors’ performance in Game 1 means the series could be all but wrapped up.
Barkley originally picked the Warriors to win in five games but now thinks the Rockets will be swept out of the postseason.

“I am just so depressed right now, man. I am hurt tonight,” Barkley opined alongside the rest of the “Inside the NBA” crew, as transcribed by Dime Mag. “Anybody who thinks the Rockets are going to win a game or win this series is an idiot. This is over, Ernie. You can’t, Ernie, you just see this game. The Rockets can’t beat them. I picked the Warriors in five, but, no, they’re not going to win a game. I picked the Warriors in five, hey, I’m taking the Warriors in three.”
As noted, the notion that the Rockets will not be able to eke out even one win in the Western Conference Finals may be overstating the significance of the Warriors’ Game 1 victory. While Golden State held strong whenever Houston tried to stage a comeback down the stretch, the Rockets’ performance nevertheless left a lot to be desired. Perhaps an adjustment or two — like guarding Klay Thompson, for one — would help swing things in the Rockets’ favor.
That said, it’s not going to be easy. Maybe Barkley is correct in stating the Warriors will win the series. But one would not necessarily be an idiot from simply believing the Rockets can win at least one game.
Although it’s hardly surprising that Barkley — known for a hot take from time to time — would be so bold in his proclamation.
