Houston police chief okays officers wearing Rockets caps through playoffs (pic)
The Houston Rockets advanced to the Western Conference Finals with Tuesday’s Game 5 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, setting up a heavily anticipated showdown for the ages with the Golden State Warriors.
While Houston of course is rallying behind their Rockets squad, it appears the Boys in Blue in town will be in full support as well courtesy of some Rockets red accentuating their uniforms.
Houston police department chief Art Acevedo, after some prodding from a KHOU-TV reporter, announced all officers will be permitted to wear Rockets caps throughout the team’s entire postseason run.
We will authorize wearing of the @HoustonRockets uniform cap during Finals for a World Championship like we did during the World Series. Actually, let’s not wait, effective tomorrow we will authorize the Rockets cap through the playoffs, but it has to be the dark cap like this. pic.twitter.com/ZAqXhIymQj

It warrants mentioning, as noted in Acevedo’s tweet, that a precedent had been set for such a move by the Houston Police Department. Officers were allowed to don Astros caps during the team’s run to a World Series title last fall.
It’s always entertaining to watch how a town goes crazy whenever a local team makes a deep run in the postseason. The Rockets of course face a formidable in their bid to unseat the Warriors as the West’s representative in the NBA Finals for the first time in four years. But it’s clear Houston is ready to cheer them on, with the local P.D. serving as a well-uniformed backup.
