Shohei Ohtani sprains ankle, status is ‘day to day’ before next start

Los Angeles Angels budding superstar Shohei Ohtani has experienced a blemish-free start to his rookie campaign. Dominating both at the plate and on the hill, Ohtani is doing things we haven’t seen since The Great Bambino.

Ohtani had his night cut short Friday after rolling his ankle on a base during the fifth inning. Ohtani homered in the previous at-bat off  New York Yankees ace Luis Severino.

Severino weighed in on Ohtani after allowing that long-ball.

“He’s good,” Severino said. “Next time, I’m not throwing inside (to him) anymore. He’s a good hitter. I threw a good pitch. I have to tip my cap.”

Ohtani has hit .341 with four home runs and 12 RBI on the season. Ohtani has also posted a 2-1 record on the mound with a 4.43 ERA so far.

Ohtani’s ankle will be reevaluated Saturday as it seems to be a minor tweak. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said, “When he stepped on the bag he rolled it a little bit.”

Ohtani’s next scheduled start is Tuesday.
