Gregg Popovich will not coach in Game 3 vs. Warriors after wife’s death

The San Antonio Spurs announced Gregg Popovich will not coach in Thursday’s Game 3 showdown with the Golden State Warriors after the passing of wife, Erin, on Wednesday, according to a San Antonio Express-News report. Assistant coach Ettore Messina will step in as Popovich’s replacement.

Erin Popovich passed away early Wednesday at the age of 67 after a lengthy battle with an illness. The couple was married four decades and had two children and two grandchildren

Erin Popovich’s death spawned an outpouring of grief in the NBA world, as well as sympathies expressed for the Popovich family from LeBron James, Kevin Durant, among many, many others.

“We mourn the loss of Erin,” Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said Wednesday. “She was a strong, wonderful, kind, intelligent woman who provided love, support and humor to all of us.”

Popovich did lead Spurs’ practice on Wednesday. There is no word at this point when Popovich is expected to return. The Spurs have not released any information on arrangements.
