David Ortiz weighs in on potential of Giancarlo Stanton-Aaron Judge duo
The New York Yankees boast a formidable one-two power-hitting punch in their batting order thanks to the offseason acquisition of Giancarlo Stanton, who joins slugger Aaron Judge.
The case can be made that the Stanton-Judge duo has the potential to be among the best pairing of power hitters in a lineup in recent MLB memory. And one former ballplayer who once was part of one such fearsome pairing of bats has thoughts on the Yankees sluggers’ potential.
David Ortiz recently was asked if Stanton-Judge already are as dangerous as he and Manny Ramirez were during their heyday as Boston Red Sox teammates. While Big Papi offered due praise, he believes work is left to be done.
“They are very powerful. That’s one thing that I can tell you right now. They have tremendous power,” Ortiz said, via NJ.com. “But I still — there’s one thing that me and Manny accomplished as a hitter, and we wasn’t just power hitters. We were guys capable of hitting for average, putting the ball in play, getting on base. It was a lot of things that when we combined, not for one or two years, we did it for a lot of years. I think these two guys, they have the talent to get there, cut down strikeouts, put the ball more in play. I know that right now, with the plane thing, for the swing they’re trying to put the ball more in the air is something that’s going to create more strikeouts, especially for power hitters.”
Ortiz added that Judge needs to cut down on strikeouts to become a more complete hitter. And yet, as has been stated by several prominent names in baseball — including one current Yankee, not to mention a Yankees icon — the sky is the limit for the Judge-Stanton duo, and in turn the entire Yankees lineup.
Ortiz is absolutely correct in the assertion that Judge has to shore up some things at the plate to realize his full potential. But given the historic season Judge is coming off, there’s no reason to expect any regression from the 25-year-old.
