Padres: Social media accounts ‘were inappropriately accessed’ Wednesday

The San Diego Padres on Thursday issued a statement in which the organization says its social media accounts “were inappropriately accessed” Wednesday night, which resulted in dispatches disseminating erroneous and inaccurate team news.

“The Padres social media accounts were inappropriately accessed last night, and messages that were inaccurate and unauthorized were posted,” the Padres’ statement reads. “MLB Cybersecurity is now investigating the matter, and we apologize for any confusion.”

The suspected hacking led to followers of the Padres’ accounts to believe something was imminent involving former Kansas City Royals star and current free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer, whom the team has been tied to for some time during Hot Stove season.

It’s worth noting that Padres team sources also informed the The San Diego Union-Tribune that the team “does not have an imminent agreement” with Hosmer, per a report.
