LaVar Ball to serve as assistant coach on sons’ Euro team
LaVar Ball, the outspoken father of LiAngelo and LaMelo — not to mention Los Angeles Lakers rookie Lonzo — will serve as an assistant coach on his two sons’ Lithuanian basketball team.
Vytautas is scheduled to play BC Dzukija in the Big Baller Challenge on Tuesday night. The five-game slate of showdowns are technically friendlies and have no bearing on the standings.
“He will be an assistant coach on game protocol but will drive the team through the game and make many of the decisions,” a team spokesman told ESPN. “The style the team is going to play is going to be LaVar’s choice.”
Given the elder Ball’s tendency to be overly meddlesome in his sons’ basketball careers, it’s arguably a risky move to allow him even more influence than what he normally attempts to wield, even in a friendly game.
“LaVar wants the team to play fast. He also has an idea for a new way for the team to play defense, so we’re going to try it out tonight,” Vytautas coach Virginijus Seskus told ESPN through a translator. “Today we’ll be like two equal coaches, but this will only be for the friendly match. We’ll see how it goes today.”
“Why not let him do it? It’s only a friendly match. It will end, and everyone will forget about it.”
Vytautas is 3-0 so far in the Big Baller Challenge but sports a 4-16 and a last place spot in the Lithuanian league standings.
LiAngelo Ball is averaging 23.3 points in the three victories in the Big Baller Challenge, with LaMelo contributing an average of 18.3 points and 7.3 assists.
