Celtics confirm date when Isaiah Thomas tribute will occur

The Boston Celtics will pay tribute to Isaiah Thomas when the Cleveland Cavaliers return to TD Garden on Feb. 11. Although another significant event occurring on the same night presents some difficulties.

The Cavaliers have only one more road game against the Celtics left on the 2017-18 regular-season schedule. However, complicating matters a bit is that on the same night the Thomas tribute video, etc. will be how the Celtics also will retire Paul Pierce’s jersey.

Celtics general manager and president of basketball operations Danny Ainge on Thursday nevertheless indicated the team will combine the two tributes during that Feb. 11 game.

The Cavaliers of course were in Boston to take on the Celtics Tuesday night. The home team came away with a convincing 102-88 victory, although Thomas did not play in the game.

Thomas made his long-awaited debut with the Cavs on Tuesday night in a win over the Portland Trail Blazers. The Cavaliers are holding Thomas out of back-to-back games as he eases himself back into action after a lengthy layoff due to a torn labrum, among other injuries, to his hip.

Celtics fans nevertheless showed Thomas a lot of love despite him not playing during the game.

News surfaced Tuesday that Thomas requested that the Celtics not air a video tribute to him during Wednesday’s game. Thomas has since indicated in a tweet his request stems from the hope that he “would like to actually PLAY & have my family in the arena to appreciate the LOVE the city/organization will show US? It ain’t about me it’s about my family…”

Regardless of the circumstances, it should make for quite the eventful evening on Feb. 11 at TD Garden when one Celtics icon and a beloved former player are honored.
