Orioles instruct critics of Kwanzaa tweet to unfollow team on Twitter

The Baltimore Orioles suggested fans who demonstrated racial intolerance by criticizing the team’s tweet wishing a “Happy Kwanzaa” to unfollow the team on Twitter.

The unfortunate social media situation began when the Orioles on Tuesday issued a tweet celebrating the first day of Kwanzaa.

Since this is social media, there was not surprisingly some people on Twitter who took issue with the Orioles’ well-wishes. The Orioles returned to Twitter to offer a firm rebuke to those who reacted negatively to the tweet in question, instructing those who engage in “hate or bigotry on our social media or in our ballpark” to “kindly unfollow us.”

The Orioles of course dealt with such issues during the 2017 season when outfielder Adam Jones said he was subjected to racial slurs and had a bag of peanuts thrown at him during a May 1 game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. It’s hardly surprising that the organization would not allow critical comments of this nature slide without calling out those who made them.
