Bill Belichick ‘happy for the success’ Jimmy Garoppolo is enjoying with 49ers
Bill Belichick says he is “happy for the success” former New England Patriots signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo is enjoying with the San Francisco 49ers.
Garoppolo, traded to the 49ers on Oct. 30 with the Patriots receiving a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft in exchange, has been a revelation for San Francisco. And Belichick indicated during an interview this week that Garoppolo’s opportunity is well-earned.
“I am happy for the success that he’s had. I’ve talked to him about that,” Belichick said on WEEI. “Jimmy worked hard, Jacoby (Brissett) worked hard, and they both have gotten an opportunity. We have another good quarterback here with Brian (Hoyer), who has been working very hard. He’s done a great job for us in the opportunities that he’s had. Obviously, a lot of those are on the practice field, but he has done a great job for us there. Happy for Jimmy and that Jacoby got the opportunity.”
To say Garoppolo has been a game-changer for the 49ers would be an understatement. After the 49ers sat him for several weeks to allow him to get acclimated, the 26-year-old has led the team on a historic in-season turnaround. All told, Garoppolo has won all four of his starts (with five appearances), completing 60 percent of his passes for 1,268 yards, throwing for five touchdowns to three interceptions and posting a 98.9 QB rating.
A report surfaced a few weeks ago indicating the Patriots deliberately avoided dealing Garoppolo to the Cleveland Browns in order to “do right” by him. With that merciful gesture in mind, it’s conceivable that Belichick truly is happy for Garoppolo, even if “happy” isn’t a word one typically associates with the curmudgeonly coach.
