Bill Belichick addresses reports of rift, friction with Tom Brady
Bill Belichick on Friday weighed in on allegations there has been a breakdown in his relationship with Tom Brady over controversies related to the quarterback’s trainer, Alex Guerrero.
Predictably, the New England Patriots head coach was not inclined to get into specifics related to reporting on the purported rift, nor on reports Guerrero’s access to the team has been restricted.
Belichick earlier this week was asked whether his relationship with Brady has been different this season, saying, “every year is different.” He was asked to clarify his response on Friday.
“Just different teams, different players,” Belichick said. “He’s great to work with. No one is better prepared than Tom. Tom’s always ready to go, always on top of it. He really takes coaching well. He’s got a lot of good ideas, but each year is different. Our team is different, players are different, our opponents are different. Every week is different.”
A report on Thursday suggested the situation is “absolutely” causing friction between Brady and Bill Belichick. Not only that, the report suggests things could reach “critical mass” this coming offseason.
It was also reported earlier this week that things have indeed come to a head, as Belichick reportedly weeks ago restricted Guerrero’s access to the team. These restrictions include barring Guerrero from team flights and banning him from the team’s sideline. Belichick hasn’t been inclined — not surprisingly — to address the situation. Nor has Brady.
Belichick was asked Friday about that specific report, and he once again railed against anonymous, unnamed sources.
“Yeah, this is another one with no sources, right? Yup,” Belichick said. “I’m not gonna get into that. Yeah, because (the sources are) not mentioned.”
Belichick asked to directly address whether Guerrero’s access has been restricted this season.
“Look, we have a lot of people that work for our team outside of our team,” Belichick said. “There’s different relationships, different situations with dozens of other people. So, I’m not going to go through it case by case of what everybody does and so forth. That would be impossible to do. I’m not gonna do it.”
