Cam Newton ‘cool’ with Diddy’s interest in buying Panthers

Cam Newton on Wednesday weighed in on music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs’ purportedly serious interest in purchasing the Carolina Panthers, saying it’s “cool.”

“I was just like everybody else. It was amusing. Obviously he’s a person that has a lot of influence in the culture and it was just cool,” Newton said during a Wednesday press conference, via 247 Sports. “I didn’t know what to expect and I still don’t know what to expect. I feel like a lot of people, you don’t know whether they are serious or are they not serious. How is it going to play out? I don’t even know how you’re going to sell something of this magnitude.

“So I’m just going to stay in my lane and worry about throwing touchdowns on Sunday, and let the rest handle itself.”

Diddy took to Twitter to express his intent to pursue the purchase of the Panthers organization shortly after current owner Jerry Richardson announced he’d be putting up his majority stake in the franchise amid allegations of workplace misconduct.

Colin Kaepernick reacted to Diddy’s tweet, saying he wants in on any potential ownership group.

Diddy afterward stressed he was serious about making a run at owning the Panthers. He added his first order of business would be to sign Kaepernick — still unemployed presumably due to his anthem protests and social activism — and have him compete for the starting quarterback job.

Newton said he’s also “cool” with that as well should such an unlikely scenario play out.

“That’s cool. I’m cool with it. Whatever happens, happens,” Newton said. “They say two things happen in competition, you either get better or get worse. I’m all for it. But as far as a person that I’ve always looked up to, Puff Daddy, Diddy, whatever you want to call him, for that even being mentioned, it’s pretty cool in itself.”

Newton, who enjoys a close relationship with Richardson, defended the embattled owner, saying he thinks “extremely highly” of Richardson while adding “nothing is proven” concerning the allegations.
