Steelers announce Ryan Shazier underwent spinal stabilization surgery

The Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday announced via a joint statement from UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) Neurosurgeons and team physicians indicating linebacker Ryan Shazier underwent spinal stabilization surgery on Wednesday night.

Shazier originally was hospitalized at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center following a frightening spinal injury during the first quarter of Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Steelers announced on Wednesday that Shazier had been transferred to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

“He will continue tests and evaluations before his medical team provides any further updates on his condition,” the Steelers said in a Wednesday statement, via ESPN. “We again want to thank the doctors and staff at UC Health’s University of Cincinnati Medical Center for the excellent care Ryan received while at that facility.”

Shazier earlier this week tweeted out gratitude for all the support, prayers and well wishes.

Shazier is said to be in good spirits despite the extremely difficult and uncertain circumstances in the aftermath of his traumatic injury.
