Isaiah Thomas, Tristan Thompson take part in scrimmage (vid)

The Cleveland Cavaliers have to be encouraged about getting nearer to having a full complement of players given how Isaiah Thomas and Tristan Thompson took part in a scrimmage alongside some teammates and team staff.

Video posted by Cleveland.com documented portions of Wednesday’s workout, which consisted of some four-on-four action.

Thompson last played on Nov. 1 due to a strained calf muscle.

The Cavaliers, meanwhile, have yet to see Thomas, acquired in the trade that shipped Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics, play this season. The point guard continues to recover from a torn labrum and other assorted injuries to his right hip.

However, reports throughout this season indicate Thomas is making significant strides in his recovery. So much so that the Cavaliers at least privately are optimistic Thomas can return ahead of schedule, which originally was set for early January.

In fact, a recent report indicates the Cavs hope to have Thomas in the lineup for a Christmas Day showdown with the Golden State Warriors, so long as he’s ready.

LeBron James hasn’t held back when expressing his excitement over having Thomas on the court. On Wednesday, as Thomas and Thompson scrimmaged, James appeared encouraged by his teammates’ progress.

“At the end of the day it’s all about the next day,” James said, via Cleveland.com. “When they say they feel good the next day after a workout session, that’s great to know.”

Until Thomas does indeed return, James has been using an unorthodox method to prepare for the point guard stepping onto the court.

“I play a lot of NBA 2K and it’s the most realistic basketball game out there,” James said. “I mix and match a lot of lineup changes and things of that nature to see how we can be really good.”

That’s certainly … something.
