Tom Izzo makes appearance in audience at taping of ‘Judge Mathis’ (vid)

Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo has been part of some big moments on the court during his Hall of Fame career. But it would appear making an appearance in the audience for a taping of daytime television show “Judge Mathis” may have topped them all.

Video was posted of Izzo’s appearance to the show’s YouTube page. The clip involves a case in which a man indicates he’s from Michigan but nevertheless is an Ohio State fan.

Mathis then points out to the man that sitting directly behind him is a college basketball coach who routinely beats his favorite team, as Izzo looks on smiling and waving. He’s seated next to Mike Garland, his longtime assistant.

Mathis goes on to say that his daughter was a “student assistant” to Izzo at Michigan State.

Mathis is a retired Michigan judge, so that possibly could be the connection to Izzo, who filmed his cameo back in August.

The episode featuring Izzo’s appearance is scheduled to air nationwide on Dec. 7.

Interestingly, Izzo isn’t the only big-name Michigan-based collegiate coach who harbors an affinity for daytime judge shows.

Michigan Wolverines head football coach Jim Harbaugh is a die-hard fan of Judge Judy. So much so, in fact, Harbaugh attended a taping of her show back in 2013 when he was head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Not only that, Harbaugh once threw his support behind Judge Judy joining the U.S. Supreme Court.

No word on if Izzo holds Judge Mathis in such ridiculously lofty esteem.
