Billboards near team facility blasts Giants for benching Eli Manning (pic)

The New York Giants earlier this week made the controversial and heavily criticized decision to bench Eli Manning. And now, team officials will be confronted with the ire of a contingent of disgruntled Giants fans via some billboards nearby the team’s facility.

Three electronic billboards have been commissioned near MetLife Stadium, where the Giants’ facility, Quest Diagnostics Training Center, also is located. The signs read, “Big Blue Shame On You,” in a font similar to the Giants logo.

The group of Giants fans who paid for the billboards have chose to remain anonymous, per a New York Post report.

The backlash to Manning’s benching has been swift and contentious within the NFL community, not to mention it having inspired patented snark from the New York tabloids.

Meanwhile, Manning has exhibited remarkable class throughout the entire situation, even mentoring Davis Webb a day after his benching. Davis is expected to see some action in the coming weeks, although Geno Smith will be under center on Sunday.

The Giants organization has since admitted that Manning’s benching could have been handled a bit better. Giants co-owner John Mara admitted the team expected some negative reaction, but underestimated the extent of it.

“I expected there to be an emotional reaction from fans,’’ Mara said. “I would say it’s been a little in excess of what I expected. Given what he has meant to our franchise and to so many people for so long, it’s understandable.’’

Suffice to say, the Giants are not accustomed to such a hostile backlash from their loyal fans. Although the same cannot be said about the New York Jets.
