Jay-Z takes umbrage to LeBron James anointing himself ‘King of New York’ (vid)
LeBron James took to Instagram last week and anointed himself the “King of New York” in a snarky troll-job after the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Well, there just so happens to be a very prominent New Yorker who has taken umbrage to James bestowing said moniker upon himself.
The Brooklyn-born rap icon performed last Sunday at Cleveland’s own Quicken Loans Arena — James’ stomping grounds, of course — for a concert on his 4:44 Tour. At some point during the concert, Jay-Z called out LeBron over the “King of New York” social media meddling.
“I told him, ‘Hey man, you my guy and all that, but you can’t be taking pictures at The Garden talking about you’re the king of New York, so I told him I’m coming to Cleveland. I’m the king of Cleveland now,” Jay-Z said.
Consider gauntlet … thrown down.
The rapper then asked fans to join him onstage to pose in “the first picture with the King of Cleveland.”
Jay-Z then invited fans on stage to take pictures with him, in what he called “the first picture with the king of Cleveland.”
Here’s the Instagram post from James that inspired Jay-Z’s retort, which featured an image of the Cavs star standing on the Knicks’ logo at center court of MSG.
Jay-Z and James are longtime pals so odds are the rapper simply was engaging in some friendly smack talk. Then again, no one messes with New York in such a manner, so perhaps there was a little more to Jay-Z calling out his superstar friend than witty banter.
