David Ortiz mocks A-Rod over picking Yankees in ALDS (vid)
David Ortiz and Alex Rodriguez of course were longtime rivals during their MLB careers as the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees battled it out for AL East supremacy. But the two retired ballplayers are coworkers now that Big Papi has been added to FOX Sports’ postseason coverage.
And it didn’t take long for the two to have an on-air moment that suggested old rivalries die hard, at least in a trolling kind of way.
It all started with the panel — consisting of A-Rod, Ortiz, fellow newcomer Keith Hernandez, Frank Thomas and host Kevin Burkhard — making their picks for the ALDS showdown between the Yankees and the Cleveland Indians. Rodriguez, perhaps not surprisingly, went with his former team winning in five games.
This inspired Ortiz to troll Rodriguez over the pick, playfully suggesting that A-Rod perhaps had some motivation for picking the Yankees.

“You gotta pick them because you’re still on the payroll,” Ortiz chimed in, via Big League Stew. Zing!
Ortiz actually is 100 percent spot-on with the assertion regarding Rodriguez’s continued employment by the Yankees. Rodriguez was hired by the organization following his retirement as a special advisor and spring training instructor, with the team paying him $21 million for those services.
Whether remaining on the Yankees payroll inspired A-Rod to pick them to beat the Indians, however, is another story. But it sure made for entertaining television, thanks to Ortiz.
