76ers rookie Ben Simmons blasts Donald Trump as an ‘idiot’
With training camps underway, NBA players are of course fielding myriad questions about their outlook on the season and other associated topics. But perhaps the most common inquiry being forwarded to players involves their opinion of President Donald Trump.
And now Philadelphia 76ers rookie forward Ben Simmons, 21, became the latest NBA player to bash the President.
Trump of course in the past week has declared war on the NFL and also uninvited the Golden State Warriors for the customary championship team visit to the White House after comments made by Stephen Curry (although there is no confirmation an invite was actually extended in the first place).
Both controversies have inspired athletes in the NFL and NBA to sound off on Trump, with Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James even referring to the President as a “bum” over his actions involving the Warriors.
But Simmons took the anti-Trump rhetoric to an entirely different level in a scathing screed against Trump.
“I think he’s an idiot,” Simmons told FOX Sports Australia during the team’s annual media day Monday, via the New York Post. “If were in Australia right now, a lot of people would call him a d—head, and that’s how I personally feel. Some of the comments he’s just made about players, the NFL, the anthem. Everyone respects America, and everyone thinks America is a great country, but he’s the wrong person to be in charge of it.”
Simmons, who has dual citizenship in the U.S. and Australia, also added that Trump is “definitely not a leader.”
“He just brings more anger and hatred to the US,” Simmons continued. “It’s unneeded. I think the US is a great country. I love being here. I’m very appreciative of the job I’m in. I think he’s the wrong person to be in charge.”
It will be interesting to see the fallout from Simmons’ incendiary remarks. But it goes without saying that the controversy surrounding Trump’s comments over the past week involving the NFL and NBA isn’t going away anytime soon.
